Things to do in Christchurch with red zone in place

Our last visit to christchurch was a month prior to the Feb earthquake. We stayed in the Novotel and had an amazing time jumping on and off the tram and spent a few days in the city. This time round we are bringing friends with us and we wanted to show them

Christchurch but have been disappointed by all the things we did last time that we are not able to do this time round. Can anybody suggest some things to do around Christchurch that is not affected by the red zone as we didn't venture too far from the city last time. We are spending 18 days touring he South Island which is all organised but I am trying to decide the number of days we spend in Christchurch if anymore

The Botanic Gardens are as lovely as ever - so is "Punting in the Park"; Riccarton House & Bush (especially if you visit in a weekend when the markets are on there); the Antarctic Centre, nr the airport; Willowbank Wildlife Sanctuary.

Is Akaroa included in your 18 days? Worth a day trip from Chch if not; also Hanmer Springs if not already included.

check out

http://www.christchurchnz.com/nz.aspx

the site I have linked to is Christchurch / canterbury tourism web site.

another publication which I have not read yet is the Lonely planet guide which has just been released placing Christchurch as the 'best in Travel 2013'

lonelyplanet.com/new-zealand/…christchurch

Lots to do, it is still Christchurch, but not as we know it

When are you coming and how many days were you wanting to stay in ChCh? The Gondola is supposed to be open sometime "soon". If you have a car you can take a drive out to Sumner and up to the Sign of the Kiwi on the Port Hills for the views.

We just came back 2 days ago from our first visit to Christchurch at the beginning and end of our bus tour. Even though our hotel (Ibis)was on the edge of the Red Zone , we had a delightful day: visting the Re Start container mall; strolling along the picturesque Avon River; exploring the world class Botanical Gardens including a nice lunch on the wisteria covered verandah of the old Caretakers cottage ; marvelling at the exhibits at Canterbury Museum and quickly peeking into Hogwarts-like Christ College.

We were too tired to go out for dinner and had a reasonable dinner at the hotel. There were 3 restaurants open reasonbly close by or we could have had a value dinner at the casino as many of the tour group did.

We were a bit concerned before we went - but we both enjoyed our day in Christchurch.

There is quite a bit of sparkle returning. However you should also do some "quake touring". A walk around the red zone inside the bits that are open is really interesting. Red Bus even run tours inside the cordon.

I always take visitors and out of town colleagues for a drive to Sumner for coffee.

There is plenty of night life around, bottom of Lincoln Rd, Merevale, Riccarton etc.

Hi Bruno - we too will be staying at the Ibis in Christchurch in late January at the beginning and end of a bus tour. I have read your interesting reviews and ours is not exactly the same tour as yours; nevertheless if you have any tips or advice as to how to get the best out of a bus tour, they will be much appreciated. D
