1month on south island and 1 month north island Jan and Feb

Arrive in Christchurch 31/12/2013. We are picking up two friends from the airport early afternoon and would like to know where to go for new year's eve where we could maybe see fireworks and some entertainment. We are 59 - 65 yrs old. We would like a good place to stop in our motorhome fairly close to the centre so we can get in by bus or better still, walk for about 20 mins into the centre. Any motorhome sites near enough for that?

Any suggestions for an itinerary for both the South and North Islands will be appreciated. One month on each. We are interested in hiking and scenery mainly, together with interesting towns and villages to visit.

What is the current cost of diesel per litre?

What is current exchange rate of £ to NZ$ and Euro to NZ$?

Many thanks for any help.

Wouldn't it be more instant to look it up on the internet than asking here?

Welcome to the forum D :)

As you have discovered we are happy to help with questions which require a little more thought than asking Google. Basic facts such as exchange rates we leave up to you.

Fuel costs aa.co.nz/cars/…

May I make a suggestion? - you might wish to spend a week less in the North island and add it to the South island. The South is considerably larger than the north and the terrain is far more rugged. Most visitors spend 1/3 of their time in the north, 2/3 in the South Island.

There are so many itineraries posted here on the forum - take a look to see what appeals to you. Once you know where you hope to go, post it here for our comments.

Chch is a changed city since the earthquakes - I'm sure a knowledgeable local will be along before long to point you in the right direction for NYE.

Happy planning :)

I spent 3wk in the north isl last September. taranaki (new Plymouth), rotorua + "the thermal explorer highway" which has about 4 or 5 thermal walks which take a few hours each to explore.

taupo, napier + nearby is Te Mata peak, a great drive up to the top well worth the views.

"the forgotten highway" Is a nice drive if heading between new Plymouth + taupo or tongariro.
