Christchurch in September

My husband and I, in our late 60s and early 70s, plan to be in Christchurch for two days in late September, or three nights and one day, with the other day on the TransAlpine Train for the round trip. We would like your thoughts on the best way to spend our other day.

We have never been to Christchurch (or to NZ) before, and we're sorry we didn't see it before the earthquake, but we are intrigued and inspired by the idea of a city rebuilding itself in some creative and quirky ways, so I'm thinking we need to go to Quake City and Cashel Street. We also love gardens and want to go to the Botanical Gardens. Any other suggestions?

Someone said somewhere on this forum that we could probably get some good bargains, and if we're going to spend money we'd be glad to help the Christchurch economy a little bit. Where would be the best place to shop (for small gifts)?

A hotel room is just that - a bedroom with ensuite.

a motel is an apartment - a studio has a bedroom with ensuite and kitchen/dining. A one bedroom has a sitting room/kitchen/dining plus bedroom plus bathroom. You can also get 2 and 3 bedroom units. Some also have a washing machine and dryer in the unit.

Motels are usually far less expensive than a hotel or serviced apartment yet they offer more space.

Some motels have a swimming pool, kids playground etc as well.

Motels were built for the car drivers (hence the "mo"). This means they are nearly always low-rise and located in the suburbs. Often you can park your car right outside the door or your motel unit, which makes unpacking easy. They seldom have restaurants - you either self-cater or eat out. As WLnz pointed out, they may have an outdoor swimming pool, playground, BBQ etc.

Hotels, OTH, are usually located in the city centre and are more likely to be high-rise. Parking can be limited, or expensive. Hotels usually have an on-site restaurants & may include breakfast. Their facilities may be a bit more upmarket such as Gyms, swimming pool, bar etc.

Motels are family run whereas the hotels are part of major hotel chains. Most NZers choose to stay in motels. cost range from about $120 to $250 per night depending on size, location and age of facility. Most have some sort of cooking facility in each unit but no restaurants on site. However most motels will be near restaurants. Camelot motor lodge will be fine and within walking distance of the CBD (or what is left of it). Other place to look is Riccarton road

That's for a single or double room? Can I get this rate just by signing up as Accor club member or you need points to get the deal? Thanks.
