Minibus option for NZ

Hi All,

I recently got recommended to create an account here on TA to read up and ask information about different destinations around the world.

I have been assigned the task of organising a trip to NZ (South Island) later in the year (December/January), and would like to know of some travel options we have. In my last trip to NZ (also South Island), we hired a Toyota HiAce (11 seater). We have 6 adults and 1 toddler. And I found that it only just fit all of us. We have to use a baby seat and also accommodate piece large luggage (5 in total) and a few small backpacks for all of us. There wasn't much room for move around in when we were in the car.

So far we have the following information:

Numbers: 5 adults, 2 toddlers

License: Australian drivers license x 4 (Our licenses allow us to drive up to 12 passengers)

Duration: Aprrox 2 weeks

Budget: TBA

Date: Dec/January

Locations: NZ South Island

I just wanted to know besides getting a trailer, what other forms of transport are available? we would most prefer to be all in the one vehicle, as its more fun to be in the one vehicle during road trips (for me anyway).

The last time I was in NZ, we arrived late (11:55pm) and we have had to be picked up by shuttle bus to a hotel to collect the HiAce. If I remember correctly, we were picked up in a Mercedes Van (Sprinter??), it was very spacious and the members of the trip thought that this was out hire vehicle (I wish it was also). If anyone is able to recommend any places which hire this type of Van, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your rime in reading my post and I hope that I am able to get some information from your past experiences.

Regards,

Phil

I have no idea what these companies are like to deal with but Pegasus Rentals has Minibus Transit 12-seaters and USAVE have 12 seat luxury coaches and 12 seat Minivans

Thanks WLnz,

I just wanted to see what our fellow TA members had experienced before and what their feedback was like.

With the link provided, could I ask if you have used this place before? I've tried googling "maugers rental review" and there doesn't seem to be much positive feedback on these guys.

I can';t find any positive reviews, just these ones. Two of them look like coming from the same person.

Nope, I don't have the need for any 12 seater vans.

But the lack of reviews shouldn't be seen as a negative - a very low number of customers leave reviews, especially for rentals.... unless it is to post that things went wrong.

After you rent a van it would help future travellers if you post a review :)

A Mercedes Sprinter will be perfect for your requirement. Maugers are the Sprinter specialists and are based in Christchurch. They are good operators and have been around for several years.

The alternative are Samuels Vehicle Hire who also specialise in luxury Sprinters, they have a base in Queenstown but locate vehicles in Christchurch. www.samuels.co.nz

Thanks again,

I guess when we rent a vehicle, it's just as much responsibility for us to do the checks on the vehicle as it it for the rental company.

Fortunately for me, I haven't come across any sourness yet, but I always perform a thorough check before and after the rental. I ensure that I have got myself covered bay taking clear photos/video that can support my case if one does arise.

Both Maugers and Samuels have sent me quotes for my requested dates almost instantly. I love the way they get back to their customers like that.

Samuels even said they would waive the usual $250 relocation fee for me (because it would be the end of their peak season).

Now that I've got rates, I'm able to research around a little more. I'm currently working on the itinerary and will upload it for everyone to see.

I'm interested to find out about your final conclusion. Also looking to rent a Minivan for my trip in December. Thanks!
