Otago

Hi everyone,

We'll be driving from Te Anau to Central Otago.

Will the drive bbe easy and what kinda drrive can we expect ? Does anyone knows ?

We're looking towards visiting the Gibbston Valley Wines at Queenstown and visitinf Arrowtown for any gold mining experiience. :)

Are the above doable within a day ?

Any recommended place to stay ? Family w a 10 yrs old son.

Thanks very much for any kind input.

Hi, are you going to try and drive from Te Anau and visit the wineries etc all in one day? Then know you won't be able to do it.

Be careful as you drive around Lake Wakatipu, as its called the devils staircase. It's an amazing drive but just be careful and drive on the correct sided the road.

I presume by Central Otago that you mean staying in Wanaka or Cromwell? Wanaka would be the best choice. There is a lot to do there. You can do a lake cruise, there are many short walks, Puzzling World, a great playground on the lake front.

Te Anau to Wanaka (for example) is actually only a 3-4 hour drive. This leaves plenty of time for stops. What time of year are you driving? As has been said above, the drive around Lake Wakatipu is very twisty, so take extra care. Other than that, it is a pretty normal drive until Queenstown. From Queenstown if going to Wanaka, you can go over a small alpine pass road - the Crown Range, or via a gorge road (another twisty road) to Wanaka, Cromwell or other parts of Central Otago.

One more point, you might be better posting this in the South island forum, or even Queenstown, rather than Christchurch.

Enjoy your trip.

Central Otago is about 10 times larger than Singapore - it is hard to recommend a place to stay without knowing which town you are meaning.

If you post your full intended itinerary, broken down day by day, we can possibly help you more :)
