A day In Christchurch

We only got one day in christchurch and we were wondering if anyone got tips or recommendation of things to do for just one day. Also which part of Chc is the best to stay and is Chc ok after the quake? Because last time one of our friend told us that Chc has become a sort of a ghost town the last time she visited (about a year ago)

Parts of Christchurch are more lively than others. The earthquake devastated the CBD, which had been where most tourists gravitated to. It is slowly coming back to life but in the meantime, other parts of Christchurch have a new energy - Addington and Riccarton most notably. Both would be a good place to stay, although Riccarton has many more options than Addington.

The CBD is almost entirely open for people to walk through, so that is an obvious way to spend some time, just to see the impact of the earthquake and the recovery efforts under way. Botanical gardens and Canterbury Museum might be of interest and are within walking distance of the CBD and each other.

The Gondola is lovely on a fine day - the views up the coast and to the Alps are spectacular..

Willowbank Wildlife Park is good if you haven't seen a kiwi up close.

We are a l;ong way from a ghost town. The CBD has a lot of clear land but even there there is plenty going on with the rebuild etc.

The city is starting to bulge in places and there is plenty of nightlife, but in different locations to pre-quake

Sorry @Killertan for hijacking your post but had a very similar question so thought I'd rather ask here itself.

I'm going to be in Christchurch for a day - 1st Jan '14 and was thinking of doing either a day tour in the city itself or a trip to Akaroa. Considering the date, which would be the better option? Would Akaroa be packed with tourists / NYE celebrations etc?

Thanks,

Aditya

Akaroa could well be packed, esp if there is a cruise ship in port.

If you have only one day it might be better to enjoy the Botanic Gardens, Quake City, the Museum, the Restart Mall, the Gondola, Willowbank Wildlife Park, the Antarctic Centre etc.

Hello there, me too have similar questions with killertan and Aditya_0212.

I'll be travelling to Christchurch this Ootober for 2 nights. Day 1, travelling day from Queenstown by bus. Day 2, plan for a sightseeing or visiting places as suggested by zhuhai2007. Just wondering if TranzAlpine train day trip to Greymouth worth it. The next morning, Day 3 take flight to Auckland.

Another question: we (2 adults) have no plan to rent a car. Is it possible justbto use punlic transport?
