Recommended Itinerary from North to South

Hi,

My husband and I are planning a trip to New Zealand in Jan-Feb 2014. We have 14 days to tour around and as most travellers would hope, to cover as many areas/attractions as we can during this time frame. We will like to visit at least one winery along the way, a stop over in Rotorua, definitely the ferry ride from Wellington to Picton, and some light hiking will be nice too. We are seeking suggestions/recommendations for a realistic itinerary which will not involve any driving. Our arrival will be into Auckland, late night at 2345 on 25 Jan 2014 and departing from Christchurch back home on 9 Feb at 1155.

Hi :)

Best take some time to study the bus routes and see what will work for you.

Once you know where you hope to go, post here for our comments.

Happy planning :)

14 days is not long to see NZ especially if you are going by bus. I would suggest

1 night Auckland

2 nights Rotorua allowing a full day for seeing sights.

Then it really really depends on whether you stay in North island and go to Hawkes Bay (vineyards etc) plus Gisborne (lovely beaches) and up to Tauranga, coromandel (beaches) and Bay of Islands.

Alternatively bus from Rotorua to Wellington. 2 nights in Wellington across on the ferry to picton and Blenheim (vineyard) down to Chch and then the Chch to queenstown. If you do this fly back to Auckland from Queenstown as it is a long trip by bus.

NZ's bus services are VERY limited by world standards as most people own a car and the tourist spots are usually far from cities. Often there is only ONE bus per day!

To see both islands you will need to fly at least one leg as Anniess has already recommended:

25.. Arr AKL

26. Explore

27. Great Sights bus AKL -Waitomo Caves- Rotorua

28. Visit thermal park, Agrodome, Maori concert

29. Bus to Wellington (all day)

30. Explore - Cable Car, Te Papa, waterfront;

31. AM ferry to Picton; pm train to Chch

1. Am train to Greymouth; pm bus to Franz Joseph Glacier

2. Explore

3. All day bus to Queenstown (stay 3 N)

4. Explore

5. Day trip to Milford Sound

6. Bus to Mt Cook (AM)

7. Hiking

8. Bus to Chch (PM)

9. Fly home

Thanks for the suggestions and advice. What we will do now is to sit down and plan the route, incorporating other modes of transportation other than coaches to save time, and post it back here for some comments =)

Just replied to your previous post but had another idea to tweak this so you don't have to go through Wellington twice. Why not ditch the wineries in Blenheim & the evening ferry & do the rest in reverse:

30. Full day in WLG

31 (what month are we talking?) ferry to Picton; train to Kaikoura

1. Whale watch; train to Chch

2. Sightsee in Chch

3. train/ bus to Fox Glacier

4. glacier walk

5. Bus to QTN

6. Winery tour etc in QTN

7. Coach tour to MS

8. Free day in Qtn or fly to CHC

9. Fly to CHC ( if time); fly home
