Kaikoura to Omarama - what's essential not to miss

Thank you awesome TA experts - in advance !

Leaving from Kaikoura, with destination really Mt Cooke to Omarama.

Should we go to Christchurch? Or should we veer west as soon as possible?

If so, where would you recommend to stop off for the night, to break the journey?

Should we just drive as long as we can, and get as close as possible to Lake Tekapo?

Again, many thanks for your insight. So indispensable.

In part it depends on what time of year you are travelling and whether by car or camper van, and specifically what is your destination. Why Omarama? If you are going for the gliding I would understand! If travelling in the next 2 months you would need to book your accommodation asap. It might help if you post your whole itinerary so we can tweak it.

Option 1 :

1. Kaikoura to Chch

2. Chch to Mt Cook/Omarama

Option 2 (inland scenic route):

1. Kaikoura to Oxford/Darfield/Methven (the former are very small villages with perhaps 1 or 2 motels)

2. Continue on to Mt Cook/Omarama.

Great to hear from you here, zhuhai2007 ! I was hoping you might weigh in. We are staying in Kaikoura nights of 3 Jan and 4 Jan. Then driving and 1 night stay ..... somewhere. Need to be at the station Dunstan Downs (not far from Omarama) for the nights 6 Jan and 7 Jan. Really must see Lake Tekapo and Mt Cooke along the way for sure. So wanted to see Christchurch and Akoroa ..... but just don't think there is enough time ! This is a 4 wk trip total, and I have tried really hard, not to overbook but rather to focus on a few key areas, and have 2-3 days there. (for instance, we are also headed to Stewart Island for 3 nights - no one understands this !). As you might be able to tell, we love our birds, of all sorts ! Again, many thanks.

My point is, are you visiting Chch at another point in your trip? If so take the inland route. Given that you are travelling at peak time and contrary to your original post, Mt Cook is not your final destination on the 5th, you might consider the long drive from Kaikoura to Lake Tekapo (about 5 -5:30hours) to allow you time for the detour in to Mt Cook on the 6th. The drive on the 6th will only be 2:30hr to Omarama, giving you plenty of time for a short walk or 2 at Mt Cook.
