Rental car recommendation

We will be arriving in Christchurch on February 20 and need a recommendation on which rental car company to use. We have read that local companies are much cheaper than the international companies. Which ones would you recommend? We will be in New Zealand for a month and will be flying out of Auckland. Thanks!

Apex gets consistently good reviews. For a rental that long, they may pay the car's fee for the inter-island ferry. www.apexrentals.co.nz

Also look at Ace. I've used them twice now with no problems.

Hi,

We have used both Apex and Hertz many times in NZ and found the service excellent. Apex are "off site" so you do lose a little time with the shuttle to and from their depot wheras with Hertz and the other multi-nationals they are at the airport.

Apex are a second tier renter so their vehicles are older and well used. They are now owned by Avis.

If you have a loyalty card the special offers from Hertz and the other majors often work out the same for a new vehicle compared to Apex.

No matter what, I think you will find the one way rental surcharge will hurt $$ss. I would suggest a loop in both north and south so you can return the car to the pick up location and avoid the fee. Obviously you need to balance the long term saving vs two rentals and no relocation fee.

Cheers,

We've rented the cheapest car from Ace before. Car was old but clean and service was good. We only used it to drive around christchurch. If you're driving around the country, I suggest you choose next range up.

I have use Apex for a number of years but tried Omega twice in November-December & found thier service to be friendly & efficient, with the same caveat about older cars (having never owned a new car that didn't bother me!).

OZRC's comment about 2 separate hires does make sense - it might pay to do a price comparison. Domestic flights can work out far cheaper than driving e.g. CHC to WLG for $59 and 1 hour vs 5 hours driving + 4 hr on the ferry + fuel + rental!!

Your experience in Auckland is not relevant to car rental in Christchurch, and posting the same message multiple times is spam.

We used Hertz and Apex in Oct/Nov 2013 and found the cars from both reliable. Hertz was a new vehicle and Apex was 2 to 3 years old - you can elect the approximate vehicle age on their website and the price of course varies. The only reason we used Hertz for part of our travels (9 days hire) was they had a depot to drop the car off at Dunedin and Apex didn't. You wouldn't have that issue with either company renting between Christchurch & Auckland (with Hertz you just change vehicles at the ports).

We had no service problems with either company - Apex changed our vehicle at no extra cost when we discovered the first one didn't have enough boot/trunk space. Apex also allow you to retain the same vehicle for the ferry crossing between North & South Islands and in our case they did pay for the vehicle fare (we had a 13 day rental from them) - we just paid the passenger fare.

Have a read at the Top Questions link on the NZ forum (top right) for information re driving in NZ and car insurance. We opted for AER cover which adds to the cost however the insurance excess on NZ car hire is very high.

We booked four car rentals with Ace for our recent trip, 2 in Melbourne, Wellington, and 14 day rental Christchurch - Queenstown. We had no problems apart from a longish wait for airport pick up at Wellington.

We booked a Tilda for the Christchurch rental and it was a very nice car with no visible damage apart from a couple of minor rust spots around the door. It had a 110,000km on the clock when we picked it up. Only minor quibble was that radio didn't have Aux in for MP3 player connection.

We picked up a standalone annual excess cover policy to avoid the need for buying extra insurance from Ace.

One small trick if you select the email-quote option they then offer you a 5% discount if you book within half an hour - a useful extra saving.

I have used Gorentals several times and have been extremely happy with them each time.

They occasionally have special seals as well. Their website is: www.gorentals.co.nz
