From The UK to NEW ZEALAND 2014 Visit and Work

I am planning to visit NZ from June onwards for the first time and hoping to stay for approximately 3 - 12 months depending on what visa i can obtain. I hope to do a fair bit of travelling in the South and North and to fund this adventure I will also need to gain some form of temporary work.

I have a couple of doubts which I hope some nice people can help answer for me?

1. Being able to manage to pay for quite long term accommodation in any one place at a time may pose a problem. I don't fancy living in a hut long term is it viable to rent with locals?

2. Gaining some form of Employment, I was initially thinking of Christchurch with all the rebuilding work going on but it seems most of the jobs are in construction and with my background being in operational / Technical / Project Administration I really wondered where I would be best staying say quite long term in the South or North and then doing my travelling from here.

Any advice from anyone who has good knowledge and experience would be greatly appreciated as I have had my heart set on visiting this Beautiful part of the world for many years.

Best to start at the NZ immigration website to get the information about visa requirements http://www.immigration.govt.nz/

Then look at working holiday/backpackers websites for information about how people do it, jobs, accommodation advice. In fact, there are plenty of uk based companies that specialist in gap years that have all the info on doing it.

You want to come this year, is already almost March and sounds that you haven't done much planning yet, good luck, visas and prep can take a while.

As above, it will be perfectly feasible to find accommodation with locals. Christchurch can be expensive because of the lack of housing stock, so that might be another reason not to consider it. If you have good skills and experience in project administration, you would have a very good chance of getting a decent job. www.seek.co.nz is the best site for that type of work.
