Inexpensive things to do: Dunedin New Zealand

Hello! We are cruising to the following ports: Hilo, Lahaina, Bora Bora, Papeete, Moorea, Apia Samoa, Pago Pago, Suva Fiji, Auckland NZ, Wellington, Christchurch (Lyttelton), Dunedin (Port Chalmers), and Sydney Australia. We will be at each of these ports end of Sept. to end of Oct. 2009 (about 8 hours at each port). We enjoy cruising and walking around the ports, and seek things to do that are low cost or no cost & safe. We don't mind long walks and hiking- as long as it's safe. Our favorite activity is to swim in beautiful, clean waters at pristine beaches. We would appreciate any advice on thrifty activities to do while in these ports. We look forward to hearing from you!

Hi travelcafe

In Dunedin, explore around the Octagon, visit the Church there and read the plaques around the Writers Walk, go to the steepest street in the world ( Baldwin St),and the Railway station is a must. If you have time, visit Larnach Castle, or Olveston House for a bit of history. Both great places.

Thank you! We especially have to see the steepest street in the world- steeper than streets in San Francisco? WOW!

Apparently so! You actually get a certificate if you walk up it.

Oh what a terrific video! I am sure we will have a fantastic time in New Zealand. Do many Americans live there? We will look forward to seeing the Albatross's again- haven't seen those since Midway Island.

I think you will find a reasonable number of expat Americans living in NZ. We sort of speak the same language.

If you are hoping to swim on one of our pristine beaches in September/October I suggest you bring a wet suit!

Port Chalmers and Lyttelton are not the best places to get an impression of either Dunedin or Christchurch. I suggest you get into the centre of the city and walk around in both cases. You will find it safe and interesting. ( The most dangerous thing about downtown Christchurch in the middle of the day is some of the new pavers are not quite flat and you might trip. However they should be fine by then)

From the Cathedral Square in CHCH you can walk to the Avon (go for a punt?) , the Gardens, Art Centre, Museum, Art Gallery in no time at all. There are two major Cathedrals, the C of E one in the Square and the rather spectacular RC one just out of the CBD. The tram ride will give you an excellent taste of the centre of Christchurch.
