Re Taieri Gorge Train

Will be arriving by cruise ship in March is it possible to purchase a ticket and board the train on the quayside since i understand it picks up cruise passengers on trips at the quay.

The trip costs of the cruise line are excessively high compared to the ticket price of the train.

Can anybody confirm whether this is possible or do you have to go to the railway station.

It is a long way from the wharf to the city railyway station to buy tickets.

you could perhaps send an email directly to Tairei gorge rail and they will be able to update you on your options

Welcome to the forum Selina :)

The train can be fully booked by the cruise ship, so if wanting to ensure a seat best to book with through ship. Yes it's a lot more expensive but sadly that's the price you pay for convenience.

Best of luck :)

I would have thought you could book the train separately on the net or by phone. That leaves your transport - you can walk out of the wharf area and there will be taxis waiting for business. if you want to be sure, you can order one. If is maybe 5 minutes extra walk.

Be aware that a Taxi to and from the port will cost somewhere around $40-50 each way. You can not normally join the Train at Port Chalmers if you havent booked your ticket via the cruise company.
