Airport Transfers

Hi we are looking at visiting Dunedin in November 2012, at this stage it looks as though we will not arrive until after 5pm. What are our transport options? Thanks in advance.

Dunedin airport has adopted a closed airport policy, in that only the companies with a contract can take random passengers from the airport, and they charge more as a result. But is all not lost - you can pre-book shuttles to collect you, so that you are no longer a random. kiwishuttles has an $18 special at the moment, and O'Brienshuttles are not far behind them. Add co.nz for the websites.

If you're planning to pay taxi prices, you may as well come in by Jaguar limousine for $75 www.classicjaguar.co.n

The closed airport policy is almost true, but not quite. The rank closest to the door is leased by a single taxi company, which happens to be the dearest one in town.

If you go to the other rank, ask the driver how much - it will be in the vicinity of $80 depending on where you are going, and could be as much as $100 if you are going right across town. You can negotiate with the driver and don't have to go with the front one. Often one further back will drop his price a bit to get a job.

Any Dunedin taxi company will take a booking from you, and meet your flight, even if it is late.

Shuttles are fine if you don't mind a long trip dropping people off on your way. It can double the travel time but is cheaper.
