Southern Scenic Route in Two Days- Which Road back to ZQN?

Kia Ora!

Oh, it's not really going to be two days, but it will be two days AFTER we see Te Anau and Milford. So we'll have two days from accommodation in Milford Sound to get ourselves to ZQN for the 11am flight on day three.

We'll have overnighted in Te Anau once and will do whatever we missed as we backtrack en route to the Caitlins.

Where should we plan to overnight on nights 1 and 2 if we want to keep moving in the right direction?

For night 2 is there any town maybe within an hour's drive coming from the direction of The Caitlins?

It looks like it's 3 hours and change from The Caitlins (I put in the name of the waterfall) back to ZQN on either of two inland routes. Which one is recommended?

Also, for night 1, I was considering Invercargill for services and a comfy unrushed stop, but is it too close, should we press on to Curio Bay?

We're more concerned with the sightseeing aspects and logistics than with the perfect lodging experience.

We're starting off in a few days and ending there late January.

Cheers!

We had one night at a farmstay at Slope Point (great views plus twisted trees) which is inbetween Waipapa Point (possible NZ Sea Lions, lighthouse) and Curio Bay. So a bit further on than Invercargill but puts you in a great pocket for sightseeing.

One hour from Queenstown - Cromwell?

1 Te Anau to Riverton to Curio Bay

2 Curio Bay to Kaka Point to Clydevale to Cromwell

3 Cromwell to Queenstown, fly out

Thanks both, and sorry to be dense, but:

Last trip, we did the "fast" inland route Queenstown to Dunedin and we still talk about how long that drive was, nearly 4 years on! But on that trip I definitely recall Cromwell, the odd town in the middle of nowhere, but as we had driven off in the other direction away from the coast that time on the inland "fast' route, I'm wondering if I'm misunderstanding my geography. We never came across The Caitlins last trip, or any coast at all until we cut down toward Dunedin. So, if Cromwell lay between the coast and Queenstown...

...how realistic/practical is this newer plan? We base ourselves in Bluff/Invercargill/Slope environs and do a day trip "spike" up the coast to The Caitlins ( I'm just after the waterfall and penguins) then return through Invercargill and up the way we came?

And thanks if you remember the name of that farmstay! We're in the packing stages and any detail is extremely helpful!

Cheers!

If you thought the trip from Queenstown to Dunedin was long, you are setting yourself up for 2 very long days of driving trying to fit in the Catlins from Milford Sound!

You have a 4-hour drive from Milford to Invercargill, and another hour to Curio Bay. Between Curio Bay and Kaka Point is where all the "stuff" is to be seen - and they are all down sideroads. You could drive straight from Curio Bay to Kaka Point and not see a thing in 1.5 hours. Or you could spend days exploring! But lets say you take 3 or 4 hours in the Catlins. Then you plan to drive from Kaka Point to Queenstown - via Gore/Lumsden (quickest route) - a 3.5 hour drive. You could shorten this by staying overnight in Kingston, about an hour from Queenstown.

It's all doable, but you'll be spending a lot of time in the car.

To answer your second post, on one wayv to Queenstown, you come out of the Catlins at Balclutha, then head north to a place called Beaumont, where you join the fast road which starts just south of Milton. That road goes from there through a number of small towns - Alexandra and Cromwell are the largest. The latter isn't really in the middle of nowhere - it is up the road a ways from Alex and Clyde, and more odd for the fact that much of it was drowned to make way for a dam.

The quicker way (I think) would see you go south to Gore and have a very scenic drive up the lake. Very little in the way of places to stay an hour away from Queenstown.

Cheers ,all!

Thanks to you, we made a much more "doable" plan. What a fine community this is. We're never let down by it.
