Hi Derek, welcome to the Kiwi forum :)

Are you intending to trek/hike/tramp with a trekking group? If so, the company involved will have their cancellation policy on their website.

If you are considering doing the Milford or Routeburn Track and using the hut system then you need to book with DOC (Dept of Conservation). Their cancellation policy is on their website.

If you book with DOC then decide on the morning that it's a bit too wet to go, you may find you get no refund. It's a lovely part of the world, but it's also a wet part of the world, famous for it's torrential rain (they measure rainfall by the metre).

best of luck :)

Trying to read between the lines a little bit here but are you intending to walk the Milford Track with Ultimate Hikes?

These guys don't cancel their guided hikes very often so you need to ensure you have the correct gear. The highest quality raincoat that you can afford is a good start as is a good quality pair of hiking boots. Rain is just part and parcel of a trip into Fiordland National Park and good equipment means you'll enjoy the trip, regardless of what the weather throws at you.

Snow is one weather condition that will close the track but is rare in April.
