Milford Sound - worth a three-night stay?

Hi all,

We're thinking of finishing a two-week trip to NZ with a three-night stay at Milford Lodge, but we're both young and enjoy activities that aren't in massive groups so we're wondering whether we'd be better staying a shorter time here and maybe finishing at, say, Franz Josef Glacier.

Also, we've seen there are group kayaking trip on the sound, but do any companies just hire out their kayaks and let you go out exploring by yourself?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!!

Hi njk,

I don't think you're allowed to hire kayaks & go out on your own on Milford Sound. We did the "Sunriser Classic" with Roscos kayaking last year & it was brilliant. We stayed at Milford Lodge in one of the Chalets overnight then did the kayaking in the morning. http://www.roscosmilfordkayaks.com/our-trips/

You could do that & then take the afternoon boat cruise for a complete experience. I wouldn't stay there 3 nights. The sandflies would drive you insane!

Great - thanks so much for the advice! So you reckon one night in Milford Lodge, with kayaking and maybe an afternoon cruise would be enough to see the sound a bit? I mean, obviously we wouldn't be seeing as much as if we were, say, walking the track, but we'd love to at least get a decent look at it. If it requires 2 nights then all good but if after 1 we'll have seen everything we could see based at the lodge perhaps we'd be better off moving on elsewhere.

Thanks again for your tips - so helpful!

Depending on what time of year you're there, you may want to stay a second night to save you driving back in the dark and missing out on all that lovely scenery. If it's summer it stays light to 9.30pm so you would be fine. You could always get there first thing on day 1 and have a look around, do the afternoon cruise, stay overnight, kayak following morning then have all afternoon to get back to Te Anau.

Good thinking - thanks so much. We'll be there in November or Feb so should be able to make the most of the long days.
