Day cruises to Doubtful Sound and Milford sound

We are planning NZ holiday, vising Te Anau on one of the days and Queenstown on the other.

I would like to book day cruises to Doubtful Sound and Milford sound

Is it better to book online, one week in advance (non refundable)

is it better to book day before / on the day at Queenstown or Te Anau

For example in Thailand it's very common that the online price would be much higher then the one you could get at the tour agent. Is it same in New Zealand?

What operator should we go with?. (No coach pickup is required)

Milford Sound day cruises are amongst the most popular of attractions in New Zealand. All of the tour operators are constantly in competition with each other. All of the operators have rolling deals online- constantly.

Your best bet is to be vigilant checking out the different tour operators' websites, as the deals come and go quickly. Buying the tickets a day before perhaps guarantees the prices will be higher. Sift through and skip the package deals- as they likely will not apply to you given you won't be requiring coach pick-up. It is my recommendation to skip the add-ons, as they typically receive poor reviews claiming they aren't worth it.

You also mentioned that you will make the trip either from Te Anau or Queenstown. For all things considered, do both Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound from Te Anau. This will make your life easier, as going from Queenstown ends up taking 5 hours- and you pass through Te Anau anyway.

For a real treat, look into staying 20 minutes away from Te Anau at Manapouri, the unsung hero of Fiordland, and the hands down most stunningly beautiful lake in New Zealand. Manapouri Lake is probably the best kayaking in the country for explorative kayaking- with 30 islands, coves, waterfalls, lagoons, portages, lush rainforests, beaches, and channels. Manapouri is a gateway to Fiordland National Park and Doubtful Sound.

Hope this helps!

Often if you book both cruises together through Real Journeys, you will get a discount. Agree that you will need 3 nights in Te Anau/Manapouri to do both cruises in comfort.

I highly suggest you do a day tour in Milford and then stay in Te Anau and do an overnight tour in doubtful sound. Real journeys do a great tour and are possibly the only company that does both and do give a discount for booking both. However, you will have to book. Doubtful sound is limited and they full up.

while Milford sound has a number of tour operator options, real journeys are the only one who make the trip across lake manapouri to doubtful sound. Do book and the prices dont usually change on doubtful expect for shoulder season when they have cheaper options.

But to do both fiords you need 3 nights Te Anau.

Doubtful is the ideal overnight cruise. Its expensive but worth it.
