driving to Milford Sound--totally confused

Having read icsam's long note re this drive, I am reconsidering my plan. One site I found indicated that this drive is 4 hours, but Icsam said 8 hours! Could someone clarify this? Thank you!

If you are driving in yourself plan to get there by about 9.45am so you can get a boat leaving at 10 am. That way you miss most of the tour buses and it's mainly independant travellers like yourself on the cruise.

We went on a Red Boat and it was only about half full. By the time we got back and had lunch all the tour buses were at Milford so when we left we never had any on the road and had a 'bus free' drive back to Te Anau.

It would help if we knew where you were starting from & if you are considering a day trip. Since MFN is the "end-of-the-road" you have to retrace your steps sometime. It is about 2 hours from Te Anau and about 4.5 hr from Queenstown, ONE WAY, without photo stops.

Therefore 8 to 9 hours for return between Queenstown and Milford Sound without photo stop.

Do make sure you go to Milford Sounds it is a wonderful experience. As others have said its just over 2 / 2.5 hours to get there from Te Anau.

We left Te Anau at 10am for a Red Boat cruise at 1:15pm. This allowed us plenty of stops along the way and a walk to the Chasm we arrived at the dock with about 1pm.

On the way back we had the road to ourselves for most of the journey.

Have a great time.

Just came back from NZ few weeks ago.

The drive from Te anau to Milford sound took us two hours driving at a average pace.

So its four hours return from Te anau.

If you want to stop on the way add another 1-2 hours.

Milford sound is stunning have a good trip !

In my experience the most accurate mapping site is google maps - http://www.google.com/maps* - they reckon 3hrs 38, one way from Queenstown to Millford.

Re: bus vs drive yourself - bussing it has the advantage that you can look at the scenery rather than the road (much of the road is very twisty) but obviously driving gives you the advantage of being able to decide when & where to stop along the way.

Hope that's a help!

*Sorry I tried to post a link to the full directions, but TA didn't allow it. try clicking on the directions tab at the top, then pasting "Queenstown, Otago, New Zealand" and "Milford Sound, Southland, New Zealand" - it should spit out a map, directions and distances for you.
