Mercure is a nice simple 3 star hotel located only a couple of blocks for the town centre.

You will easily spend half a day out on the Otago Peninsula which is where the Albatross and Penguin Colony's are located. It pays' to book in advance though, Feb is extremly busy.

It depends on which Mercure hotel you are booked into - the North Dunedin one or Princes St one. The Princes St one is much better located, and much nicer. Its restaurant is also nice, if a little pricey for Dunedin. However you are only 5 mins from the Octagon which has heaps of eateries, and also close to the Dunedin institution of Speight's Alehouse Restaurant, which you should visit!

If you are in the North Dunedin one it still is a decent hotel, but it depends on what part of Feb you are in Dunedin, as from about the 20th on it will be quite noisy out that end with students returning to Orientation Week, but the streets you are on are not the major student streets.

Head out to St Clair, and also the Peninsula is great - where you will see penguins and the colony, very pretty landscape and some great views back to Dunedin.

If you have spare time you should look into taking the Taieri Gorge train, or heading north to the Moeraki Boulders (less than an hour), which are pretty cool.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask as I live in Dunedin.
