Drive Around Queenstown in July

We have planned a trip to Queenstown during July, believed to be peak winter.

Is it safe to drive around Queenstown for sightseeing in a Toyota Corolla Hatchback during these days.

Will the car need chains while driving around during this time of the year.

Generaly ok to drive around the town and surronds, but alway be cautious early in the morings, on shaded areas and places where the road is dry, when normaly it should be wet because it is shaded from the sun all day.

Ensure you have chains with you that fit the car. ensure that you have been taught how to fit chains properly

ensure that you have practiced fitting chains as well

unless you intend driving over the crown range or up the ski fields, then generaly speaking you wont need chains

A good point raised by coaster2, be sure that the chains you have fit your tyres! I had a friend who had a rental and when they went to fit the chains they were incorrect, not very helpful when you are at a 'Road Closed, except for cars with chains' situation.

All good rental car companies will include chains for all rentals in the South Island but many charge extra. Don't skimp, you'll need them, it is compulsory to carry chains on many roads.

That said I've only ever had to fit chains when accessing ski fields and have otherwise managed to avoid them after years of driving around the South Island. Just watch the weather forecasts and if snow is predicted down to low levels stay off the roads.
