driving Christchurch to Queenstown 1st week of september

Hi, can anyone advice me if it is safe to drive from Christchurch to Queenstown in early september? Will the road be covered with snow making driving dangerous? I have driven this route during autum and love the scenery and feel it will be fantastic if the mountain is snow-capped. My only concern is road safety.

The road will be as safe as it is now. There is nothing to worry about

Thanks for the info.

BTW, do I need chains for the car driving during this time of the year?

Not if you're just driving Christchurch to Queenstown, unless the weather patterns are completely haywire. Maybe if you want to go over the Crown Ranges, but not necessarily - play that one by ear.

We have travelled that road in September three times (only struck snow once on the road, but that was on a side trip to Mount Cook). We had chains with us but didn't need to use them. And you're right, the scenery with the snow covered mountains is spectacular!

The colours will be fabulous. Snow is possible in September but not likely. Check the forcast. I probably would not worry about chains as if it snows it will be short and sharp. The altitude of the road is quite a lot lower than the mountain tops, even through Lindis Pass.

Has anyone driven from christchurch to queenstown at night? are we likely to get ice on the road? If we drive we should get there about 11pm- is this madness ?

yes there will be ice on the road on the winter

yes, there will possibly be snow on the road in winter

yes it is unsafe, unwise, totally idiotic, don't even think about it.
