Where to go? Please help!

We have booked flights to Christchurch 25th Nov this year returning 5th Dec, and accommodation at Queenstown from 27th Nov to 5th Dec. We will have a hire car, and accommodation booked at Christchurch the first and last nighst. As we only have a couple of days each side of Queenstown, can anyone suggest an itinerary to get the best from our time? We'd really appreciate it!

Welcome to the forum C :)

My suggestion for arrival;

25 arrive Chch

26 drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook

27 explore Tasman glacier and icebergs http://www.glacierexplorers.com/ drive to Queenstown

I'm confused with your departure - you have your last night's accommodation in Chch booked yet you have accommodation booked in Q'town through the 5th, and are flying back from Chch on the 5th? It will be a busy time on the 5th!?

Oh whoops! Thankyou for pointing that out. The Queenstown accommodation is booked until Dec 3rd, not 5th, so just one free night before and after Queenstown.

Some ideas for our stay in Queenstown would be great as well.....

Taa!

Driving back to Chch up the West Coast is three full days of driving or you could return to Chch via Dunedin which could be done in 2 days or just drive back the way you drove down. Stay one night Wanaka and the following day drive through to Chch.

I loved Akaroa just a short trip out of Christchurch.

Thankyou everyone. May I just ask why we should take the bus to Milford Sound and not the hire car?

In Nov and Dec it is okay to drive to Milford (best NOT to drive May through Oct due to snow, ice and avalanche season).

However Milford is not a day trip if driving from Queenstown (the bus trip takes 13 hours).

To drive - the ideal is

day 1 drive to Te Anau - glow worm caves?

day 2 drive to Milford, explore/cruise, stay Te Anau

day 3 drive back to Queenstown

option two is to

day 1 drive Queenston to Milford

day 2 drive back to Queenstown

if cost is immaterial and the weather is fine then take the ultimate trip - bus Queenstown to Milford, cruise, helicopter (or fixed wing) back to Queenstown - it's fabulous.

If driving, care must be taken on the Milford Road. it has severe weather issues year round (snow in Jan is not uncommon) and it has a high rate of road accidents. The road is steep, twisty and narrow plus it is full of tourists, many of whom usually drive on the right, and the driver can be distracted by the stunning scenery and take their eyes off the road. Plus some are simply tired. Apparently driver fatigue is the main cause of NZ road accidents.

Now that I have scared you silly...

Thankyou very much for your very informative response. Unfortunately, cost is VERY material.... sigh....
