Welcome to TA NZ.

What we do is find a guided tour itinerary by a good tour company and then follow that.

You would be better to contact a company that has experience in setting a trip like this in motion. The reason being is that you are already very late for that period of the year. Contact http://designzontravel.co.nz/

They will be able to save you a lot of time.

Do you mean 20th Dec? - thus you only have 2 weeks? This is not enough time to drive both islands. You need to choose one or fly between eg drive Akl-Rotorua-Taupo-Wlg-ferry-SI (either west coast or east/centre) to Queenstown and then fly back to AKL. What are your interests - ie where do you want to spend the most time?

Do be aware that Xmas-NY is the busiest time to be travelling in NZ and you will need to prebook almost everywhere, esp Queenstown & the Glaciers and also the interisland ferry.
