Hi,

What time of the year are you visiting?

I would suggest you need more than one night in Fox.

IMHO Lakes Hawea, Moeraki and Paringa are well worth a stop. Don't forget to feed the sandies at Haast.

Cheers,

Wanaka is worth an hour or two; then there's Blue Pools & the Gates of Haast. On a fine day you'll find the drive takes all day so don't dally. (On a wet day you won't be so inclined to stop so can probably make it in 5 hours)

Hi Just done that I went via Wanaker and the Haast pass. Make sure the Haast pass is open before you go been some trouble with land slides check the net Get plenty of petrol and snacks as no station between Hass township and Fox town fantastic journey with rain forrest on one side tasman sea on the other allow about 6 hrs but you will find plenty to see and photo to delay you enjoy the journey

Liz L, Yes the road should be okay. Haast pass might be closed overnight.

Small chance that a storm or other unpredictable event would close the road but they can not be planned around.

Haast Pass is closed every night from 4pm to 8:30 am while they work on stabilisation. But you shouldn't be planning to drive at night. Do check the NZTA or AA site every morning before you start driving and don't leave too early if there has been a frost. However, Lake Matheson is best viewed early if possible before the wind disturbs the reflections.

We have just returned from Franz Josef on the West Coast where some parts of the road were still a little icy at 11am so do be very careful if there has been a frost. These places will be heavily shaded and receive either little or no sun so take note of the road signs indicating ice and grit and slow right down, especially on corners.
