Chch >Milford Sound >Chch possible in 3 days?

We are flying into Christchurch tomorrow 14th March and were intending to leave for Auckland on 17th but would like to see Milford Sound. Is it possible and worth it to do this trip in 3 days? Wishing we had chosen to fly into Queenstown instead but can't change this now. Would we be best driving to Queenstown or can we drive straight to Milford Sound area?

Thanks

What a hellish trip you have planned for yourselves;

14 arrive Chch, drive 6.5 hours to Queenstown - far far longer once you add stops for food, sightseeing etc

15 bus/cruise/bus Milford Sound - 13 hour trip**

16 drive 6.5 hours back to Chch along the same road already covered

17 fly to Auckland

** bus/cruise/fly back to Queenstown is the best tour but costs far more.

my suggestion - fly Chch straight to Queenstown on arrival, or fly Q'town to Chch at the end.

What time is your flight back to AKL on the 17th? If later than noon, you could stop overnight on the 16th at Lake Tekapo; or you could spend the 16th in Queenstown & fly ZQN-CHC-AKL on the 17th.

Hi guys, thinking probably best to fly straight from Queenstown to Auckland as we don't have the flight to Auckland booked yet. Could stay on till 18th March if too much to do in 3 days but have a wedding in Auckland 21st March. It is going to be quite expensive between car hire down to Queenstown and cost of trip to Milford Sound but everyone says the views are just so great on the drive down so would be sad to miss out. Flights to Queenstown coming in at over $200 dollars each so not really a cheaper option. Milford Sound is my choice but partner just wants to do a wine tour to Cloudy Bay vineyard. This would be much cheaper and easier , I guess!

Land in CHCH and drive to Te Anau as soon as possible (around 7 hour drive. Stay the night in Te Anau and in the morning its a 2 hour drive to Milford Sound (great drive). Drive back, stay in Te Anau agin then in the morning drive to CHCH.

You'll spend more time in the car than anything else. would skip auckland if possible as south island is the best hehe

Yes as above it is all possible, done that sort of thing myself too, however, where have you flown from before landing in Christchurch. it is important to get a good nights sleep first. when driving, if you do start to fel sleepy, do not just keep pushing on, fatigue is a serious killer. stop have a sleep, then have food before continuing on. please dont be a road fatality statistic
