How many days should we set aside for Queenstown?

We just got home from South Africa and of course we are planning our next vacation. We are planning to visit NZ & Australia later this year for 2 weeks in late December- early January. It's a lot but we would love to do both if possible. How many days do we need in Queenstown? We love dramatic scenery, beautiful drives, wildlife, and fine dining. Basically anything beautiful and scenic. We're interested in Milford Sound as well. Is 5 nights enough to experience Queenstown?

Its still possible to get last minute accommodation in many NZ towns even over peak holiday season. I sometimes drive down to Kaikoura for a last minute New Years eve and never have trouble getting accommodation. I also know that Blenheim, Picton would have vacancies at that time of year. But it would be cheaper to book ahead, and the nicer affordable places book first.

In more popular holiday destinations like Golden Bay, Queenstown accommodation might be more difficult to find... so probably is worth booking ahead.
