Based out of Te Anau for Milford/Doubtful Sounds?

We are visiting family in Christchurch and want to do a trip to see the Milford and Doubtful sounds.

We are thinking of doing a day cruise of Milford, followed by an overnight of Doubtful. Does this sound like a good itenerary? What cruise/s would you suggest? How much time would we need?

hi TC :)

You could drive to Queenstown or Cromwell in one day and then another 2 or 3 hour drive to Te Anau the next day.

When are you planning to visit? It is recommended you take a bus tour to Milford in the winter months. The road has a high number of accidents and it is best to have a driver trained in handling the alpine conditions.

I don't think there is a 'best' company. All the cruises follow the same itinerary. Some tours include lunch, some include extra walks. Just find a tour which suits your interestes and budget best.

With the Doubtful Sound overnight trip, many prefer Real Journey's as most cabins are private with ensuite bathroom. Some prefer other companies as the cost is less. Only one company operates through through the winter months.

Hope this helps, happy planning :)

Although a lot of people and tour busses do the Milford journey from Queenstown in a day it is a very long day.

I suggest you stay overnight in Te Anau. Leave at 8.30 am the next day and drive directly to milford. I know there are lots of things to look at along the way, but go directly to Milford. This way you can make the 11 or 11.30 am sailing on the Sound. This sailing is not as crowded as the next one (1 or 1.30) as allthe tour buses bringing in the tourists have left Te Anau later or have driven allthe way from queenstown.

Do your cruise, then on the way back stop and look at all the other things - Chasm, Mirror Lakes etc. If you have time go down the Humbolt Valley almost to the end of the road, good walk up to the waterfall.

Take care driving on this road. A lot of tourists can come to grief because they aren't aware of the conditions.

Would be a very long day to do the Milford cruise from Queenstown, Te Anau is a very good base as the Doubful cruises leave from Manapouri with is around 15 mins drive away.

We stayed in Qtown & used Real Journeys to do both sounds. They picked us up in QT early AM and then took us first to the Doubtful sound overnight. The next day, the dropped us in Te Anau around lunch time. We had a leisurely afternoon, visited the glow worm caves & intended to see the great movie that everybody recommends (but didn't get to it! :( ) The next morning, Real Journeys departed from Te Anau and did a tour to Milford and then returned to QT late that evening. It worked out well for us if you have 2 nights to spend.

If visiting in Winter, take a coach to Milford sound. The road can be severly affted by snow and Ice during winter , not to mention the odd avalanch too. unless you are well skilled in fitting and driving with chains in seriously bad conditions, then please take a coach.

Doubtfull sound for the overnight makes les of a rush as to see all of the Fiord, as most of the trips do, you will need plenty of time to absorb it all.

Dont forget plenty of memory in you camera / video and charge your batteries well before entering.

I recommend that you stay in TeAnau. Christchurch to TeAnau is a long drive and again if it is winter, best to plan to caution, leave Ch-ch about 9 am and stay somewhere along the way such as Queenstown then continue on to TeAnau. Do the Glowworms that evening, then Next day Milford Sound, then Doubtfull sound,

Your return to Ch-ch could then be through to Gore (about a 2 hour drive) or Dunedin, stay a night then return to Ch-ch
