Christmas Day in Te Anau

We plan to spend Christmas Day in Te Anau, whilst we are travelling round and Boxing Day in Dunedin on the Wild Life Cruise.

The question is what's on in Te Anau on Christmas Day? have not chosen accomodation for this one night stay yet, any ideas folks to celebrate christmas i like my home comforts and it normally comes in either 4 or 5 star accomodation.

Does everything grind to a halt over christmas or do you still cater for tourisim over Christmas period.

Regards

Wolfie

NZ pretty much closes up and goes on holiday from Christmas through New Year, with all levels of accommodation busy, many restaurants will have limited hours, most tours will be fully operational.

I suspect your biggest concern will be finding accommodation willing to take you for one night on Christmas Day. Te Anau is a very popular destination and many places will have a minimum night stay over the holiday period. Best to book early and once you have secured a place, ask them for dining recommendations. You will need to book your Christmas dinner well in advance.

I would also suspect that Te Anau christmas dinner will be in the hotel: its a fairly small place with a handful of decent places to eat, only one or two actually good places to eat, and they're likely not to be open. You could check out the reviews here on TA and make enquiries of anything looking likely.

At this stage, your best bet for somewhere to stay is looking like the Luxmore or the Kingsgate - both very average hotels, but there's no proper five star place in Te Anau, unless you want to go somewhat more remote and check these places out: http://www.takarolodge.com and http://www.fiordlandlodge.co.nz

Hi - yes options are limited on Christmas day in Te Anau but the town dose still have some. All the Hotels offer a Christmas day dinner or lunch and there are still a few smaller restraunts open. Whatever is open will take bookings and it will be wise to sort out with whoever you book your accomdation through. Many Motels do take the time to spend with their Families and give their staff a day off, hence you will struggle to get accomdation for one night over Chistmas in Motels. If you can find accomdation in a motel, most do offer full kitchens which will allow you to cook yourself - if that is what you want to do.

Te Anau will certainly be open on Xmas day; Tourism is big business here, and none of the operators will want to miss out on the tourist $. However as WL says, your problem might be getting a booking for just the one night of Xmas eve. Most accommodation providers try to minimise the work load on Xmas day so that their staff can have more time to spend with their families.

You are only likely to find a "Xmas Dinner" style meal at one of the larger hotels. Distinction Te Anau, and Distinction Luxmore are a good choice, as are The Village Inn and Kingsgate.

Another good option is to do what many Kiwis do, grab a cooked chicken & salad from the deli, and a couple of bottles of good wine, and enjoy xmas lunch by the lake.

Xmas in NZ is very much an outdoors thing, since the weather is invariably beautiful on Xmas Day, and on any other public holiday you care to name.

Te Anau has many options for Xmas day. On previous years Real Journeys have run day trips to Milford Sound from Te Anau and/or Queenstown on Xmas day.

Many Thanks All for your contribution, looks like we may change our plans and be spending more time in NZ due to just finding out that it is the rainy season in Fiji!
