Welcome to the forum :)

This explains everything …govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/…

There are only two designated campsites on the Routeburn Track - sited near the Routeburn Flats and Lake Mackenzie Huts. Campers share an open cooking shelter with an adjacent water supply and a pit toilet. The use of hut facilities by campers is not permitted.

DoC does not appreciate campers using our National parks as toilets so you must camp where toilets are provided. Harris saddle is also very exposed and it could be dangerous to attempt to pitch a tent there.

It can get quite exposed up on the Harris Saddle as well.People have died on the Routeburn. As the others say you are not allowed to camp unless 500 metres away. Also, the hut wardens used to check as well. Distances are not that great between the huts.

Even experienced tramper can be caught out by just how fast the weather can change. This is the first bit of land that is hit by Antarctic winds.

A few years ago we tramped the Milford. For 3 days we were in shorts and "T" shirts. On the last day we were wading in knee deep water and the party 1/2 behind us found the same crossing waste deep. Don't be tempted to break the rules.

DOC staff are contantly on these tracks.
