Mermaid Beach

Hi All

Firstly, thx for all your comments - v v good! Travelling with entourage 19-30 Apr. Love to pick your brains.

a) Turtle Beach at Mermaid Beach, any comments? (already read what posted)

b) For 8yo son - busiest/quietest days during the week for theme parks?

c) For the grandparents (UK northerners) we need cheap plain food and cheap beer (bless 'em) - any ideas?

d) For the aunts/uncles (yes, we are travelling in a pack!) anyone been to the outback experience show thingummy yet?

f) Finally, for me, will be hanging out for good coffee/good food round Mermaid Beach or nearby - any suggestions??

Thanks heaps! A Grockle from Perth

Just a few comments to say since we stayed one hotel down the road from Turtle Beach.....we knew a family that were staying there same time and they said it was fabulous.

Theme parks ~ we went to Dreamworld on a Friday....very busy, had to queue for ages for rides even though it wasn't the school holidays or anything....lots of people and lots of kids. Seaworld on a Saturday was pretty busy, likewise WetnWild on Sunday. Avoid doing the theme parks on the weekends if you can. We did Movieworld on the Monday.....again quite busy and had to queue for the best rides BUT on the Tuesday we found both Movieworld and Dreamworld be be signficantly less busy....so my advice would be to do the themeparks on a Tues/Wed/Thurs.

Grandparents......eating out, we found a great little bowling club at Mermaid Beach that offered good cheap meals (nothing fancy) and alcohol at moderate prices. It was only about 8 minutes walk down the road. The staff were very friendly too.

We also did a Chinese Restaurant at Mermaid Beach....forgotten what it was called though, think it was the first one you came to heading towards Pacific Fair....it was quite tasty and moderately priced I guess.....only complaint it wasn't quite enough to fill us all.

Another place does a big breakfast for $8.00....that looked really nice as we often passed by and people were eating...again don't remember the name but it had tables outside.

Have a great trip...we did.

For the theme parks Tuesday for some reason is particularly quiet (when it's not school holidays). If you wish to go to WetNWild with your son, cloudy days are less crowded and after 4pm.

I agree with above post the bowling club is great and any of the local surf lifesaving clubs usually have great, cheap basic meals.

I'm going to the Outback experience on the 11 April so I will let you know what it's like.

For Good food and coffee near Mermaid beach I would head for the Broadbeach mall for good coffee, gelatos and people watching.

There aren't a great deal of restaurants at Mermaid Beach most of them are closeby at Broadbeach though.

For great food you could try Chiangmai Thai Broadbeach (for the best Thai food and Thai decor in Australia...chunky wooden Thai furniture with ponds and waterfalls meandering through the restaurant), Lummy's at Mermaid Beach (cheap & cheerful Chinese),Marios or Rossini Italian restaurants both at Broadbeach. Volare Italian restaurant at Broadbeach has won lots of awards and is viewed highly, however it is very expensive.

Cheers Jo

Hi Grocklejo, stayed at Turtle Beach approx.four weeks ago.I would highly recommend this resort for families who have children aged 10 years or younger. The resort is well maintained and has numerous pools to swim in.The apartments are self contained (in the true sense of the word)and clean and tidy,at least the one we stayed in was.Cooking utensils are always basic in self contained aparts.maybe owners consider that people don`t want to cook much anyway?

There is a cafe on the premises that serves basic meals and on a "kids eat free night" was packed out.

The desk staff are friendly/helpful.

There is a good chinese res.across the road and a sushi train.Went to the Memaid Beach surf club which was well priced.Food was good but two meals were under cooked. The Thai res. as reported by another post is of high standard. There are many restaurants within easy walking distance so on the nights you don`t want a barbie, take a stroll.Don`t know about good coffee as the general hot temperatures turned me off drinking it to often.A cold beer/wine on the other hand was the preferred option.Bottle shop across the road. The Outback Show looks like it might be a winner but was not open at the time of our visit.

Have a great holiday.

Hi, Mermaid Beach is a great place to stay. Best beach on the coast! Mermaid Beach Surf Club has a good feed, as does the Nobby Beach Surf Club. If you can get rid of the kids for the night, book into DRACULAS restaurant near the Casino. Well worth a look, but book really early. Its fantastic in a group too! Have a great holiday,.
