Need hotel advice for Sep 2013

I've spent several hours looking for a hotel and all I have to show for it right now is a headache. I need some clarity as it's been a very long time since I was on the GC and I can't recall a thing.

We'll be travelling to OOL in Sep for a weekend away. We are happy to stay in Broadbeach, SP, Main Beach or other as long as the hotel suits. Plan on getting a cab or shuttle to the hotel but will sort this out later. We will not have a car.

We want a room with ocean views, preferably unobstructed. The hotel should offer room service and preferably have on site restaurants. I don't want to be rattling around an apartment and I definitely do not want to even see a kitchen/kitchenette. A very short walk to the beach is preferred. And given this is over a weekend, somewhere that's not too rowdy. The weekend is primarily about walking up and down the beach and lazing by a pool.

We are looking to pay max $350 room only per night but will go higher if we think it's warranted.

So, the Sheraton Mirage is out as they have no rooms at all. Not sure why as I can't see any major events that weekend. A real shame.

Peppers, Sea Temple and Oceana are out because they do not meet my criteria.

I am left with a very short list of the Hilton Surfers Paradise or Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa. At the Marriott, we can book an ocean view room. On the Hilton website, you can't. It's just a request.

Anyone have any thoughts on my first world dilemma? Any other hotels I should consider?

Thanks, Mez

It is very odd indeed, that one particular weekend, their entire inventory is zero, where no other property is closed out. If you can be bothered, you could contact them directly and asked to be short listed for those dates, but then you also run the risk of rates increasing at other properties in the meantime.

Hilton Surfers is quite a nice property, and if you're happy to stretch it to around $375, their Corner King is guaranteed ocean view. They also have the only Beach Valet Service on the Gold Coast.

A property which is often overlooked is Sofitel Gold Coast. Their Superior Premium - around the $300 mark - is also guaranteed ocean view, although the distance to the beach is a touch further to walk. They've recently acquired a new GM, and a new Director of F&B, both of whom have a reputation for demanding the very best with culinary service, and has been making all the right noises in the industry. The location of Broadbeach may appeal more to some than the midst of Surfers also.

I personally am not a great fan of the Marriott at Surfers.

Thanks, KVE. What are you doing up at this hour? I thought I was the only Aussie insomniac on these boards?

Yes, my plan is to call the Sheraton tomorrow to find out what's happening.

I did consider the Sofitel and it's a brand I like. The downside is it is further back from the beach than I would like and some of the pictures on TA are underwhelming. Also, many of the reviews discuss noise issues.

I'll keep it on the list in any case.

Absolute pleasure.

Yes unfortunately, I too am an insomniac of sorts, partly due to overwhelming amount of work - which I really shouldn't bring home - and partly due to being distracted from work, as I have one eye on the forums because many of the threads overseas are responded to late at night. Such vicious cycle.

I do hope the Sheraton does become available for you.

From an industry perspective, I find it really hard to imagine a true 100% guaranteed occupancy, 5 months out. So the likelihood of those figures changing is high - which doesn't necessarily mean they will reload the inventory, but I suspect they will have a few rooms not advertised to keep up their sleeve.

Hi,

Another nightowl here.

If you will not go for Peppers or Sea Temple, which are probably the premier product s on the Gold Coast at the moment. I would agree with KVE that you should definately consider the Sofitel.

Also what about the Versace? I haven't checked the price but they often have specials which may go close to your budget. Maybe.

But apart from that Sheraton would be great and I am sure if you call them they may be able an explanation why they are showing full occupancy.

Now I know that Jupiters is not that close to the beach, but their pool area is fantastic in my opinion. And I love the whole vibe of the place. You can easily catch a monorail to the beach. And you have many restaurants a Casino and a show at your fingertips.

Hi BB,

Good morning!

I just followed up your suggestion of Versace, as I too considered the property when I originally posted. And much to my surprise, it too is booked out for that September weekend. So perhaps there is an event taking place - localised - that we aren't aware of. Because it is too much of a coincidence that two properties opposite each other are showing zero availability, but none of the others in the Gold Coast are.

Yes, morning KVE.

That is definately quite odd. I can't think offhand what it would be but it may be a large conferance at either property perhaps?

What dates are we talking about here?

I think they just want to keep me out. I swear I am presentable!

I've been looking at Fri 13th-Sun 15th Sept.

I would definitely go for Main Beach or Broadbeach rather than Surfers if you want quiet. I also would consider the Sofitel at Broadbeach, but haven't stayed at any of the others mentioned.

It looks like the Thursday and Friday are the probem because it's showing availability for Saturday and Sunday. If your stuck on that weekend maybe come Saturday and go home Monday?

Well, I called the hotel and yes, it is fully booked. The person I spoke with had no idea why but assumed it was for a conference.

I can't change the dates. I'm sure we will be satisfied with what we end up choosing.
