Drive Melbourne to Gold Coast

Drive Melbourne to Gold Coast

I will be driving from Melbourne to the Gold Coast in the July school holidays, over 3 days towing a Caravan. I will be the only driver with a 6 year old in the back seat! Any suggestions for routes would be appreciated. Updates on any current road works would be great too thanks. I know people ask this question a lot, but with so many road works, a current idea of how the roads are would be helpful. Thanks in advance :)

IMO as you are the only driver with a child I would recommend 4 days to drive Melbourne to the Gold Coast.

your best bet is using the Hume Highway from Melbourne to Sydney. - its approx. 10.5hrs drive so you will need to stay overnight somewhere depending on what time u leave Melbourne.

Sydney to the Gold Coast - approx. 11hrs - stopover half way

Melbourne to the Gold Coast -

Hume Hwy & e via Pacific Hwy · 1,715 km18 h 44 min

current road works at various locations between Grafton and just north of Byron Bay on the Pacific Hway. None should be terrible delaying....a speed reduction at most is about the only inconvenience.

If you going to travel the Hume/Pacific route you need a pre plannned plan for avoiding endeding up on a motor way that landsyou in to the middle of central or suburban Sydney.

The last time i drove Melbourne to almost the Gold Coast I went via Dubbo (a six year old might enjoy a zoo outing if time permits) and crossed back to the coast (well Pacific Hway) from Armidale to Grafton, but thats probably not a good caravan route. if you go inland, less school holiday traffic, but some where you will need to cross mountains to the coast - you will need ask question about the best option - maybe Tenterfield to Casino/Lismore.

Not towing anything but as a solo driver I left Melbourne late afternoon day 1 to avoid heavy early morning traffic stopped a couple hundred kms north, day two to Dubbo, day three to Grafton ( but i would suggest that pushing it a bit much....so the four day suggestion is good.
