Dolphins and whales near Margaret River

Is there anywhere near Margaret River where we can get up close to dolphins (decided Monkey Mia was just too far away for our trip). I believe there is a centre in Busselton but is there anything closer to M.River? Also, in October (beginning) where is the best place to see whales?

There's also a spot on the coast at Dunsborough where you can see sea lions. There's a park with a longish (2km or so) made path hugging the coastline you have to walk along to get to the rocks where they sunbathe. Ask at the Tourist Bureau for directions.

Bunbury (1 hour drive from Margaret River) has a Dolphin Discovery Centre. If you are lucky in the morning, you will see them come up to the shore.

If you go to Augusta and watch from the Colourpatch Cafe, you may see dolphins in the Blackwood River.

I was at Bunker Bay Resort for lunch last week and saw whales.

Have a look at the local tourist bureau's and see if there are still whale watching tours.

There are Whale Watching tours that operate from Augusta and Dunsborough, you can find details at www.margaretriver.com or

www.legendcharters.net.au

We have often seen pods of Dolphins in the Blackwood River but they are wild and follow their own instincts.

Personally I would rather stay in Margaret River which is central to the wineries and has plenty of restaurants which open 7 days a week.

We did a walk around Cape Naturaliste (near the lighthouse out from Dunsborough) on the look-out trails on the weekend and 5 humpbacks went past in 1 hour., including a couple of calves Take the binoculars to really enjoy the breaching, tail slapping, general whale fun. The New Zealand fur seals are on the rocks below, you'll hear them as you approach from the cliff above, noisy fellows. BTW, the wildflowers are gorgeous here now.
