blazing paddles- complaint

On the 23rd of January, 2012 we booked a four day trip on the wanganui river with a tour operator called Blazing paddles.

We tipped with the canoe on the first day and eventually got picked up with a jet boat back to the blazing paddles offices.

During the incident we were treated awfully and extremely rudely by Blazing Paddles' owners.

That's a first time such a thing happened to us.

Luckily we met a wonderful local couple who helped us by guarding the canoe, giving us a ride back to town and confronting the Blazing Paddles owners for the bad way they had treated us.

Eventually, when we got back the owner refused to give us a refund for the three remaining days and also refused to put us back on the river saying that he can't trust us to finish the route, so he won't let us have a canoe and finally shutting the door to our faces.

We know that generally tourists don't pursue such matters and just accept the fact they were ripped off and that's the reason some tour operators allow themselves to act in such a way. That is exactly what we want to prevent.

interesting that you should wait over 8 months before singing up with TA just to make a complaint, is it possbile that you just found TA and decided it would be a good place to vent???

There is no excuse for them being rude, but if you fell out of the canoe and had to be rescued they probably rightfully didn't have confidence in your canoeing ability. They get booked out weeks (or months) in advance so they would be losing income by giving a refund. However, some form of refund would have been a good gesture.

There are several things I do not understand with this post

1 why wait 8 months before writing about it on this forum?

2 was this a guided tour?

3 If you were being guided then what happened when you tipped out

4 where were the 'local people' that you met following the incident that you write of?

5 have you written to the operators, and if so what was their reply?

I am sorry if this looks a bit much, but there is usualy two sides to every story, it can be easy to damage the reputation of an operator due to lack of information. However if you do have a legitimate complaint about an operator, it is important that the operator has been given full opportunity to rectify such complaint. If you are still disatisfied with the action or inaction of the operator then there are many on this forum who will help wher they can.

Blazing paddles hire canoes and aren't guides. You don't need a guide on the Whanganui River anyway. Only one way to go, and that's downstream.

We capsized three times. There's a big rapid on the last day where everyone capsizes. You're wearing life jackets and as long as you hang on to a paddle and the barrels are secure it's no great drama. Swim to the boat, drag it ashore and tip the water out. If the OP couldn't manage that then I agree with Blazing Paddles not letting them out again. Short of completely wrecking the canoe (and they are tough little boats) or losing both paddles and the spare I can't see any reason why they couldn't continue on the first day. Perhaps the OP just didn't like being wet?

For anyone contemplating the paddle, it was a great trip. The upper Whanganui River is very beautiful and peaceful.

Bean, you know what its like, but we must still be courteous, and be helpful if we can, but it does seem odd, 8 months later to complain and as a first time poster. Yes I would like more information to make an informed opinion

Perhaps orly f has been attempting to get a refund or compensation during the last 8 months, and has only now turned to the forums as a last resort? I think giving people the benefit of the doubt would be nice.

I'd also like to point out that orly f did not sign up to Tripadvisor to complain about Blazing Paddles. There is another contribution a few weeks back, easy enough to check if you want to.
