West coast drive or Transalpine train in August?

We are looking to tour New Zealand in August and would be able to fit one of the above into the itinerary. We are aware it will be Winter. What would be a better experience both in terms of weather and scenery, the train between Christchurch and Greymouth or driving between Wanaka and Greymouth along the West coast?

It would be better if you posted your whole itinerary. If you drive from Wanaka to Greymouth, how are you going to leave Greymouth? Both are spectaular drives.

We are then planning to drive up to Abel Tasman National Park (Nelson) and a few days later take the ferry back to the North Island.

if you need to toss up between one drive or the other , then go wanaka to greymouth. you will sufer from scenery overdose with this drive.
