Do the dolphins. They are much more active and interested in you.You can swim with them too.

The whales just surface, blow and dive again.

But if you have never seen whales they are special too.

We did the whale watch and saw dolphins in addition to the whales. So if you are not intending on swimming with the dolphins, I would suggest the whale watch.

Do the whales - well worth it. I booked this online prior to visiting in 2007 and was not disappointed. The site of the whale's massive tale fin is spectacular in its self!!

Would def do it again. Enjoy!!

We did a whale-watching trip while at Kaikura, and will never forget it.

You can see dolphins all over the NZ coast and if you go into the outer reaches of most NZ harbours you have a very good chance of seeing them. Whales especially the big ones are something else. They are O for Awesome and take your breath away. There is a better than even chance that you will see dolphoins on your whale encounter anyway.
