Kaikoura with a 1 year old

Just heard that there is an age restriction on whale watch. Does anyone have a suggestion for things to do (preferably involving whales or dolphins) with a 1 year old.

I think you'll will find most dolphin watch/swim operations throughout NZ have an age restriction; usually under 3yo. And you've already found the whale watch have and as they are the only company doing the WW then seeing whales will be off the itinerary. Seals will be your best bet, there are a number of colonies around the Kaikoura area just make sure you stay the recommended distance away from them and never get between them and the sea. They are very fast movers and some can be aggressive, it's very easy to slip on the rocks or lose your footing, something you'll not want to do carrying a 1yo.

You can fly with your 1yd to see whales. I think both the fixed- wing and the helicopter flights are free for under 5's.

Or consider a Black Cat nature cruise in Akaroa instead. I actually prefer Akaroa to Kaikoura anyhow :)

There is a seal colony on the side of the road at Ohau Point about 15 minutes north of Kaikoura. Across the road (careful its the main highway) is a 10 minute easy track up to a waterfall. Sometimes the seals go up the stream here. They may look cute and cuddly, they are not so don't get too close. You can buy cooked crayfish from Ninns Binns here as well.
