Abel Tasman--need hiking boots?

Not sure if the terrain in Abel Tasman warrants hiking boots. Not wanting to be a poser or anything, but do the kids and I just attack with running shoes or should we opt for a little ankle protection? We are hiking from Marahau to Bark Bay or Awaroa over a couple of days in December.

Our family did a day walk of a section of the track (Anchorage to Onetahuti, which is between Bark Bay and Awaroa) a few years ago. The track is undulating with some hills but is not difficult and we had no problems just using our running shoes. As you are only planning on a couple of days I think you would be fine with running shoes too.
