have never been to Costa Rica, so I want to do all I can to be environmentally friendly. I have heard some negative things concerning the Riu

Canaeco is the national chamber of Eco/Sustainable Tourism: http://www.canaeco.org/

Rainforest Alliance has done a good job in the arena as well: www.rainforest-alliance.org/work/tourism

The RIU does not have many friends in this forum. There are several alleged issues with them regarding destruction of protected land, illegally cutting trees, in a nutshell they are accused of paying off officials to look the other way and ignoring environmental laws. Then they got caught. These issues are still ongoing.

IMO if you are coming and concerned about the environment then choose a different hotel.

In addition to the instances referred to by Incabod, there are ongoing and very difficult issues with being able to get enough water to service both the huge hotel (1200 rooms) and the local people. You can guess who will lose........

Read about Arenas del Mar...they are constantly taking strides on being as eco-friendly as possible
