Transportation to and from Riu Guanacaste Costa Rico

We are traveling to Costa Rico, staying at the Riu Guanacaste and was hoping someone could advise us about transportation to and from the airport. We will arrive at Liberia Airport and was wondering about availability and cost of a taxi to and from the hotel.

Thanks.

Hola and welcome to paradise! There are lots of the red taxis at LIR for every flight arrival. They typically use smaller cars... depending on the size of your group, a taxi may or may not be a good fit ...

liberiacostaricaairport.net/Liberia_Airport_… has info and lists the rate as $110 each way for a taxi ...

$75 each way for private shuttle using

https://www.transportation-costarica.com/ind…

You should pre-book your shuttle and the driver will be waiting as you exit from the customs area.

Pura vida and enjoy!

Well, no. And no.

A taxi from the airport to the RIU is around $50-$60. That $110 figure would be a round trip cost. Look here: www.liberiaairporttaxis.com/taxi_rates.php These folks get great feedback here on the forum and are reputable and professional.

I would not recommend using transportation-costarica.com

You can just walk out of the terminal and get a taxi - or - arrange one ahead of time using the website. Either way, it should be no more than $60 from the airport to the RIU. Of course, if you have a big group and need a van taxi, it could be a little more.

And I'd like to apologize for the rude answer you initially received. Normally, I NEVER help anyone who is going to stay at the RIU (it is one of the most hated hotels in Costa Rica) but because someone was so rude to you, I jumped in to see if I could help you.

Thanks for the info. This is our first trip to Costa Rico and seemed like the Riu had really positive feedback. Curious as to why you say it is the most hated hotel in Costa Rico. Anything we should be aware off? Thanks

HappySmurf: There have been many (many) discussions on this forum about the RIU. The dislike for the RIU originated during the construction process when they broke quite a few environmental laws, including killing of wildlife and pulling up of protected mangrove trees. (Among other things such as bribing local officials, there are court cases, etc .....) The whole place is just so un-Costa Rican that it makes most people wince. It's two giant buildings with a total of some 1200 rooms while most resorts are in the 250-400 room category, in several low buildings, scattered throughout trees and beautiful landscaping.

One thing to think about: there is a serious drought in that area and farmers are facing massive losses - up to $50 million - so while you are at the RIU, please use as little water as possible. Cows and plants are dying all around the hotel while their clients happily enjoy their three showers a day. At least one hotel not far away has had to resort to bringing in water in trucks and other hotels have discussed closing temporarily.
