The best car rental company IMO is Thrifty....they are fab for any outback stuff..as they have many offices within the region...
Make sure you tell them your itinerary and be sure to book a 4WD. Suggest you book as soon as possible as they don't keep a huge stock of vehicles at Yulara.
Yep, if you want to do the Mareenie loop, then you have to book a proper 4WD.
We booked a Cheaper camper van in Alice (part of Apollo), for 1 week and had a fantastic time, even managed to get most of the way down Palm Valley.
Whoever and whatever you hire, make sure you get unlimited kms or the extra charge will add up.
We were told the only place that offered the unlimited kms was to book your vehicle through the visitors centre in Alice. Maybe it's different from Yulara
Thank you so much, we've gone ahead and booked Thrifty on this advice.
Do you have to have a 4WD or is a small 2WD okay to drive through the outback?
Jo, it depends where you're going. Most of the major sights are on sealed roads just fine for a 2WD... if you want to go on dirt then that's a different story and there are a few attractions that involve rough dirt roads where a "real" 4WD is required - eg the Mereenie Loop out of Alice mentioned above, or Palm Valley is another.
