New Zealand Campervans Freedom parking

Hello,

Can you please tell me where can we park with a campervan? Where can we park during the night and sleep, where can we park during daytime.

Thank you

Generally you should go one size larger than you minimally need. So for 2 persons get a 4 berth, for 4 persons get a 6 berth. Any more than that you should ideally look at two campers.

You should check with the van rental company about taking it across on the ferry. If you intend returning it to the same point as you picked it up they would probably have less objection than it you wanted to leave it on the other Island. Ferry charges are quite high, hence the reluctance to allow their vans to cross Cook Strait.

Kea is a reputable company with a large number of vans and depots. Maui and Britz are also good (same company, 2 brands). Beware of smaller companies which probalby will not have the support network in case something goes wrong.

I've hired a 4 berth Kea. It would be excellent. (we only frredom camp!) the kea van is fully compliant witha cassette toilet and grey water tank. It's not worth getting a 6 berth, it's the same size as the 4, just configured differently. Their product, back up etc is really excellent. the west Coast of the SI is very Freedom oriented. some people wuill use a camping ground every 3 or 4th night to get the washing done and to fully charge everthing. Generally the rules are : not within 1.5km of camping ground or where there is a specific "no camping" sign. kiwi's that own campers freedom camp. Unfortunately some vans are not compliant and these people mess it up for everyone.

There are dump stations everywhere. There is no excuse for not using them.
