Playa Las Ballenas Residencia , Las Terrenas

we (50's couple) are looking at a trip here in March, also a couple of days in Santo Domingo - are there any safety concerns? Also we are thinking of renting a car rather than taking the buses - any comments from anyone with experience in this area is appreciated, along with any suggestions for other places of interest in the area. Thanks.

I'm assuming that since you are Canadian you will fly into El Catay airport? We stayed 5 or so years ago at this place and checked back by last year and it is under new management. The new people seem very nice and although we didn't actually see if any remodeling had taken place it is in a nice area with great beaches and a very safe part of LT. Since from what I have heard there is no place at el catay to rent vehicles you would need a transfer to the resort(it is a small place with only 6 or 8 units from my recollection) and then would have to rent the vehicle somewhere else or have the managers arrange it. We always have a copy of our passport to leave with the rental place so that we don't have to leave our real passport (many places ask for it). The type of vehicle needed depends on how much off the beaten trail exploring you wish to do. A diahatsu terrios or suzuki gran vitara or something similar will get you almost anywhere on the peninsula, a regular car will get you to all the major towns but not to most of the beaches. Look on the Samana peninsula guide here on TA to see the attractions available, not sure if the whales will still be here as they usually go elsewhere in early to mid march. Driving to and around (especially around) Santo Domingo is not advised as it is congested, crazy and most certainly best to know the area well before trying. If you are set on this idea then fly into SD and taxi to the city for a day or two and then bus to LT. Good luck and happy travels, Ben
