Recommendations for guest houses in Dominican Republic

We visited the D.R. once and stayed at a large all inclusive hotel in Punta Cana. I can honestly say that we did not enjoy the experience. It was packed to capacity with revellers who's sole ambition was to eat and drink as much as possible.

It did not feel like we were in Dominican Repulic, we could have been anywhere in the world. There were lots of activities such as volleyball but we did not travel all the way there to play volleyball with drunken tourists.

The only part of the island which we saw was when we went on organised trips and that was from the comfort of a coach.

We would like to return and explore the island, in particular the lovely East cost and pretty beaches, we fell we would like our money to be spent on Dominicans and not on some large corporation based in the USA or Canada.

Can anyone recommend some small guests houses, apartments or bungalows that are friendly not too expensive and close to some beaches.

Your help would be most appreciated.

Happy Travels to all,

Cheers!,

Gary.

Las Galeras and Las Terranas would be good areas to consider and are not dominated by AI resorts. Many of the hotels and guesthouses though in these areas are also owned by expats rather than Domnicans. Worth getting a copy of Lonely Planet or the Rough Guide to the DR. Internal travel is easy by public transport - and there are other areas you could visit eg the SW, Santo Domingo, central mountains etc..

Have a look at the new Dominican Treehouse Village!! They've just opened and there is a page on here with a few reviews and also a facebook page.

We're booked in for one night following our zipline excursion with Tour Samana with Terry. Can't wait!

You can also look at AIC real estate in Las Terrenas, they offer a wide rage of condos/houses available. We have had guests use them and they were very happy with the variety. Tell them we sent you, they'll extra good care of you!

Thanks guys for the excellent recommendations all look amazing. I particularly like some of the guest houses recommended on the the Juan y Lola website, like a set from the movie 'Castaway' or a Bounty advert. Pure paradise.

When you look at those beautiful beaches and stunning nature you wonder why anyone would want to stay at one of those impersonal bland all inclusives which give you no feeling of the country you are in, and are full of obese people ings drinking and overeating while missing out on the beauty and culture of country they have flow thousands of miles to be in.
