Torres Del Paine?

Hi All,

My husband and I are planning a trip to Patagonia and are trying to decide whether or not to add TdP to our visit. We will be travelling 8-10 days in late November and have decided that El Chalten (Fitz Roy) is a must for us! We enjoy long challenging day hikes, beautiful scenery and comfortable accommodations. We are more do it yourself types (vs. guided tour groups) and don't mind driving.

Is 8-10 days enough to fit in both? Also, does any one have experience with the all inclusive packages (ex. Explora)? The locations and grounds of some of these properties are stunning which we would love to expereince. I'm just worried that it might not be our thing given that we like to go off on our own. Thanks for any input!!

8-10 days gives you enough time, even allowing for a day to travel between the two.

Have you thought about Hosteria Los Torres near the Laguna Armaga entrance? It is near the start of 'the Towers' path. There are guided activities from the hotel each day which you book the previous night if interested, otherwise you do your own thing. There is no need to book into the expensive all inclusive Explora package, especially if you have a hire car. Roads are unsurfaced but drive slowly and sensibly and you will be fine.

Get a map and plan your own excursions. This is a possible choice as it has contours and gives distances and estimated walking times:

TDP is definitely suggested. You can visit in 8-10 days, but if you are set on doing Fitz Roy as well these two destinations will comprise your whole itinerary really. TDP should be minimum 4 days/5 nights, and it is a full day to get to the Fitz Roy area in Argentina. In my opinion TDP is the more spectacular scenery, as Fitz Roy is simply the other side of the mountains.

Explora is every bit as fantastic as it's price tag is. Doing an 'inclusive' adventure package is a good idea especially if going to Arg as many include the transfer at least to the boarder, and some even all the way to El Calafate which is the jumping off point for the Perito Moreno Glacier (must see if going to Fitz Roy). Here is a broad breakdown of the best lodges in TDP:

1) Explora - most expensive but incredible in every way, horseback riding in addition to other excursions - http://www.explora.com/explora-patagonia/.

2) Tierra Patagonia - Explora's new competition, little less expensive and awesome as well - http://www.tierrapatagonia.com/

3) EcoCamp Patagonia - great hiking-focused package that allows you to hike an abbreviated version of the famous 'W' while staying in comfortable accoms - much more affordable - Wildlife Safari option for a less hiking intensive itin also available -  http://www.ecocamp.travel/

4) The Singular- very new and rave-worthy. Outside of the park but with access to park in addition to more fjords and vast wilderness outside the park. Horseback riding and kayaking excursions, excursions are generally a bit less 'active' - http://thesingular.com/puertobories

5) Patagonia Camp - middle of the group pricewise - really neat 'rustic luxury' concept where you're staying in really cool yurt style safari camp. Not as much flexibility in terms of excursions - http://www.patagoniacamp.com/index_eng.html

I'd be happy to work out a skeleton itinerary suggestion, however need to know if you're going in/out of Santiago or doing in STG, out BA or reverse. This can be a through trip as opposed to a closed circuit.

Cheers and all my best in life's adventures,

I would cut out Torres del Paine, and save it for another trip. Not enough time. Best to focus on spending quality time in El Chalten, without rushing over to see Torres del Paine...

8-10 days is definitely enough for both. You could do the W in Torres del Paine, if you can still get reservations at the huts. Not luxurious, but a very enjoyable trip. If you are going to do this, let me know, and I can make recommendations for which huts to book. It is also easy to find this info on line. I liked TDP better than El Chalten, and I believe I did both in around 9-10 days. There are two main long day hikes from El Chalten. Hiking on the glacier also is a lot of fun. I spent 4 nights doing the W hike.
