What to do in Airlie Beach

Hello - we are a late 20s couple who are going to be based at Airlie Beach between 14-17th May and was wondering what are the "must-dos" in and around the area besides day tripping to the islands? We will have a car and won't mind driving, if required. Many thanks in advance!

Hi!

Great that you have a car - you can get to all the spots that are off the beaten track.

Go to Cedar Creek Falls, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EmlQjvQtlQ which is still flowing at this time of year, thanks to some recent rains. (Just please don't jump off it, it's not safe, people get injured every year).

Getting there:You can find Cedar Creek about 30 mins drive from Airlie - head west towards Proserpine, turn left at the Conway Road turnoff, then turn left at Saltwater Creek Rd. All turns are signposted for Cedar Falls, but some signs are a bit faded, so keep your eyes peeled.

Have lunch at Hydeaway Bay at Montes or the Cape Gloucester Eco Resort which are about 45 mins from Airlie. Both are open to the public for meals, but have little cabins on the beach for overnighters too.

Getting there: head west towards Proserpine again, turning right at Gregory-Cannonvalley Rd (signposted for Bowen, Dingo Beach). Almost at the end (before Bruce Highway) turn right onto Dingo Beach Rd. before you reach Dingo Beach, there's another sign directing you left to Hydeaway Bay. follow this all the way to the beachfront, and keep going! There's a cul-de-sac with a dirt road off it, take this dirt road about another 4kms to the two resorts which are a few hundred metres apart.

Have fun, and let us know what you did and how you enjoyed it!

Cheers,

TW

Have just returned and wanted to let everyone know of a great new restaurant / cafe. Airlie is short on good food options. Make sure you visit the Easy Cafe on the beach side of the main street of airlie. Jules and Julie are new to area. Fresh seafood cooked perfectly with really great flavours. One of the best meals we have had, and we did not break the bank either. Plus it was a BYO only 3 p/p corkage. We had a salt and pepper calamari and I do not eat calamari, but this was just divine. And you get water views at the end of the walkway. It is also a must to walk into the Coral sea resort even if it to sit for awhile by the pool, it is right on the water edge. You will have a lovely time just lazing and soaking up the atmosphere. Breaky there is average the big breaky was ok but went to great because of the view !!You will make sure you go to Whitehaven though they is a necessity. Would recomend you take an overnight cruise and do a sunset at whitehaven, very special.

OK - to answer my own question, since I have just returned as well, we really enjoyed just walking up and down the main street, by the lagoon, and on the water's edge. We also really enjoyed dining at Fish D'Vine and Rum Bar - we went there twice during our short time there! Also, they have great Saturday markets, camel rides by the beach and a great little bead shop where you can sit there and make your own beaded jewellery! Oh, and we also went to Whitehaven - simply spectacular.
