Cairns or airlie

Hi all,

Can you tell me whether you recommend airlie beach or cairns for a group of 3 girls in their 20s traveling to Australia? We want to see the reef, but we've heard cairns is soooo small we will get ores. Is there more of a nightlife/scene in airlie? What is he major difference between the two?

Thanks!

Another vote for Cairns as there is heaps more attractions. ie...Daintree Rainforest, Great Barrier Reef, Mossman Gorge, Cape Tribulation, Kuranda & Port Douglas. Cairns is also perfect for your age group.

Airlie is way smaller than Cairns and surrounds. Yes it has a backpacker scene, but then so does Cairns and Port Douglas.

The major difference is Airlie is a town, with good options for water based day trips.

Cairns is a city with an international airport, wider range of accom and is the business centre of the north.

Airlie is small and the main street is packed full of backpacker hostels, bars, nightclubs and restaurants. You'll have a blast if you come to Airlie!

One of the highlights on many travellers lists is an overnight sailing trip. You can go for 1, 2 or 3 nights, and see the best of the islands and sometimes the reef too, from the water. Sailing trips include accommodation, meals and snorkelling, plus sightseeing some of the most beautiful uninhabited islands in Australia. It's loads of fun! You are able to scuba dive on reefs fringing the islands, which can be spectacular, unless you choose a boat which is licensed to go out to the outer reef itself, which is another option, albeit limited to a few vessels only.

Whichever destination you choose, you'll enjoy it.

Let us know where you decide to go!

I would go to Cairns as it is a launching pad for some great places, Port Douglas, Daintree, Atherton Tableland. There are many outer reef tours to choose from Port Douglas.
