Best things to do Labour Day Weekend in Burleigh

We're heading to Burleigh Heads March 9-12.Weather's not looking flash. Any insider suggestions as to best things to do and see in the area. We'll have a car and we hate theme parks!

Personally, I love the Gold Coast hinterland areas. Go for a cruise up to Mt Tamborine, Springbrook and the Natural Bridge. All beautiful.

Another good day out is a walk around Sanctuary Cove. Very Interesting. Lunch at Georges or the pub.

I would suggest a drive to Byron Bay and Mullumbimby if you want something different... will take about 45 minutes Lots of galleries, walking trails, healing centres, beaches... just depends what you are into (No theme parks)

We spent a couple of weeks around that part of the coast last month and the weather was a bit hit or miss. Coming from the UK, our perspsective may be a bit different as we do not have rain forest, stretches of beautiful beaches or shopping malls on the scale we found on the Gold Coast. We enjoyed the Tambourine Mountain area and the surrounding hinterland. The skywalk was good value but I would only go when it is dry. Unusually for someone from the UK, I do not like the rain. There were also problems with some of the roads being closed due to floods so take a good map.

For a one off which was one of our highlights, the Palazio Versace in Southport do a very filling and nice afternoon tea for a reasonable price. This was worth the experience, makes a nice change if the rain is too bad and is probably the only thing we will buy from a 6 star hotel. Dress code was relaxed and the staff were friendly. Broadbeach has some good restaurants (Auto Lounge very nice and there is a chocolate based restaurant whose name escapes me), Surfers for a few beers in the Irish Bar overlooking the Surfers Paradise sign and a good shopping mall in Robena.

For a good night out, Draculas (opposite Pacific Fair shopping) is a laugh. It is a bit touristy, a bit kitsch but if you go with it you will have fun. Did not get to the Casino near Broadbeach but was told it made a reasonable night out.

Good luck with the weather and hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
