Cafe/restaurant recommendations for family of 4 inMooloolaba

Hi, we are a family of 4 (our children are both teenagers) and we will be visiting Mooloolaba from the UK in August. We would be grateful for some café/restaurant recommendations. We love fish, Italian, thai but also the occasional burger. The £ is very poor value against the Aussie $ at the moment and I think we will find everything very expensive compared to when we visited over xmas in 2009 so some recommendations for reasonably priced eats would be welcome. Also, do some of the restaurants still do early specials (ie dine before 6.00pm)?

Thanks for any advice

Julie

Hi Julie,

You are right - eating out in Australia is very expensive these days.

I don't live in Mooloolaba, but we go down there quite a bit. We mostly eat at the Surf Clubs - Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headlands and Maroochydoore and at the cafe strip on the Esplanade - they are pretty much all the same pricing around that area.

For a cheap lunch/breakfast with great views, go to the ocean side of the Alexandra Head Surf Club, they have a take away window that makes killer chicken/avo wraps, brekkie burgers and smoothies/milk shakes, coffees etc and it's dirt cheap (lunch around $10 or under) and the views along the coast are fantastic. A local favourite with families and surfers alike. Very busy on weekends.

Hi, quite a few have early bird specials. All the Thai restaurants are very reasonable ( there are at least four we have found!). Pizza from augellos is well priced. The hamburger & fish & chip shop on the river esplanade (near Sailport) is good - eat it alfresco in the park near the boats. Otherwise, most apartments have BBQ utensils, use the bbq's & have some fun. The Coles supermarket is handy.

The Mooloolaba Fish Market is the best in Mooloolaba. It's on Parkyn Parade and you can walk down the beach to the spit, go over the sand dunes, pick up your fish and chips special for $10 each and head back down to the beach for a family feast. It is connected to 'The Deck' where you can sit at tables and chairs and overlook the Marina but the view is nothing compared to the beach.

Aqua Pacifica's recommendation of Alexandra Heads Surf Club is a good one as well for a cheap feed on the go.

You'll see Bella Venezia on the main strip and they do have a early bird discount but overall they're quite expensive.

Take the kids to Montezumas for dinner. Well priced Mexican with a great atmospher, but keep them away from the Sangria as the Tequila in it gives it an extra kick.

There is a Thai restaurant called Thai Seasons. It's cash only and the food inexpensive and delicious. You'll find it around the corner on River Esplanade (almost opposite Parkyn parade)

A word of warning, there's a new yogurt shop that's opened on the esplanade, If the kids go in they'll cost you a fortune. It's not a rip off but it charges by toppings and the kids will heap them on if your not careful.

Hope this helps

"The Mooloolaba Fish Market is the best in Mooloolaba" - yes ditto to that Oscar.

May i suggest the Irish pub beneath the Mantra for $10 lunches, it always gets us in followed by a take away coffee from Emjay sitting on the beach.

Enjoy!
