Noosa area or Byron Bay

Travelling within 7 weeks to Brisbane area.We are in 60 age range. We like quiet places with things to see and not just beaches. How does Noosa area and Byron bay compare, especially for people in our age range - not sure if will hire a car yet. Like to get general idea of both. From previous posts both seem aimed to young age range. Have either got good day trips out - must sees?

Both are beautiful spots with lots to offer. Both offer hinterland areas with much to see and do including markets, galleries, walks, cafes etc....so it is a tough one.

Both do cater to young people well but I think you will find an more mature market in Noosa.

Byron has a very large transient backpacker community and a very large established 'alternative' community. Noosa has a little of both but also a large corporate and well-heeled interstate owner market. Also Noosa has a great river that you can hire boats to explore ( no license required) and it leads to the Noosa Everglades which is really interesting too.

So, Noosa.

I would say Noosa would be better suited for you. Lots of great restaurants; a nice beach for swimming, surfing, fishing, sailing, etc; the national park just on the headland for lovely walks.

Touring activities include:

- Fraser Island

- Noosa Everglades and general river cruising

- Hinterland - Maleny, Montville, etc

- Teewah coloured sands

- Eumundi markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays

Be aware of school holidays 20 Sept - 5 Oct 2008 (possibly longer for private schools). Noosa is a very popular holiday spot so you'll want to book sooner rather than later.

Totally agree with Noosa for the the "older' traveller.

Byron Bay (unfortunately) attracts a larger, younger backpacker clientelle.

Of course there is the luxury end of Byron Bay but truly, Noosa and the Sunshine Coast in general are doing it much better.

Thank you very much for info. It looks like Noosa area wins.

We are struggling with itinerary. We are going to be in Sydney for 10 nights for daughter's wedding and then thinking of driving Great coast road to Melbourne (via Jervis Bay etc)

Stay 3 nights in Melbourne

Fly to Brisbane (not sure of length of stay yet - possibly 5 nights (Noosa)

Fly to Cairns - Stay Port Douglas area - must see

Daintree Forest/GBR and then trying to decide whether to go to Whitsunday islands (boat trip) but seems difficult to reach Hamilton by air or how do you get to Airlie Beach from Cairns? 7 - 10 days.

From Cairns/Sydney for flight home

Not sure whether the boat trip around whitsundays would be suitable for us as we are in 60 range and not as agile as we were. Any ideas? Otherwise we'll miss it out.

Would it be good to have car hire in Noosa area and Port Douglas - or it is as easy to get tours?

Thank you in advance. In addition we should tell you we live in a small island in the canary islands spain.

Lucky you ! (Spain)

How many days in total will you be in Australia for ?

Your plans looks quite good, providing you are not too rushed. ie. How many days have you allowed to drive Sydney-Melbourne ?

The Whitsundays are really magnificent but you will see great things in Far North Queensland too and if The Whitsundays become too difficult you may have to forgoe them this time.

Provided you can get to Noosa(from Brisbane) and Port Douglas(from Cairns) - there are transfers available - you dont really need a car. Both places have lots to offer in the general locality and tours available for things like The Eumundi Markets etc. The hassles of parking, navigation etc... may not be worth the hire.

What else ( cant see your last post now so have to remember all the questions - TA are you listening !!) ??

sorry will come back to it...

Hi thanks for reply.

Weather warm and sunny here. This is a mecca for body, windsurfing etc too. Plan to be in Australia 4 and a half weeks. 10 days in Sydney (daughter's wedding etc) Will visit Blue Mountains.

Have allowed 5 nights to go from sydney to Melbourne. Would like to do longer but think just enough? What's your view?

3 nights Melbourne

Fly Brisbane and now decided to stay in Noosa area (thought about 6 or 7 nights as a lot to see)

Thinking probably forego Whitsundays this time as probably a little difficult to get from Cairns.

Then fly to Cairns and would only have about a week for that area - Port Douglas, Daintree etc. which isn't so much time.

Thanks for info cars - maybe would like to not stay in centre of Noosa though, maybe around Lake Weyba so would need a car to get around more. Not decided on this yet.

Hope I've left enough time for Port Douglas area.

I would appreciate any suggestions re must sees.

Probably could get transfers there as excursions seem to do 'pick ups' from hotels.

Any ideas re accommodation?

Under 4 weeks before we leave Lanzarote, so time marching on... thanks a lot.

Actually your itinery looks great. You will see and do a lot - but at a relaxed pace. You'll have a great time.

We like to stay in Noosaville, which is on the Noosa River just behind Noosa heads. The river is gorgeous - gives the beach a run for its money at times. You can catch the Riverlight ferry that stops all along the river and takes you into Noosa Heads. A perfect way to see everything and get around at the same time. There are zillions of accomodation choices so try www.wotif.com.au or one of the local real estate agents who do holiday letting, like;

www.dowlingneylan.com.au, or

www.lagunarealestate.com.au

school holidays are coming up - check their websites as this will affect the prices.

Just a thought, you can fly Melb to Sunshine Coast and hire a car or arrange transfer here rather than drive from Brisbane.

Enjoy!!

Just like to say thanks for responses.

Didn't realise the school hols were Sept/early Oct - is this all over? Seen some hotel websites in Cairns area and it's cheaper end of September and increases in mid October.

Will probably think of plenty more questions yet. Yes Noosaville sounds nice too. The trouble is you have too many wonderful places to visit!

Am even wondering if we should turn it around and visit Melbourne and do coast drive at end of trip as have to fly out of Sydney.

Are 5 nights a lot to do the coast drive Mel/Syd or vice versa as I believe there is a lot to see there too?
